War Widow(er)'s Pension

At Apex Financial Services Group, we understand the sacrifices made by our defence personnel in service to our country. That’s why we are committed to providing support to the widows of Veterans who have passed away as a result of their service.

Understanding Your Entitlements Following the Loss of a Veteran

Losing a partner is never easy. For the spouses and families of veterans, navigating government benefits and support services can add another layer of complexity during an already difficult time.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) provides a range of financial and support services for eligible war widows and war widowers, including the War Widow(er)’s Pension, healthcare benefits, income support and other concessions designed to assist individuals and families following the death of a veteran. [dva.gov.au]

At Apex Financial Services Group, we understand that these entitlements often form only one part of a person’s broader financial position. Understanding how DVA support interacts with superannuation, investments, estate planning and retirement income can help provide greater confidence and certainty for the future.

What Is the War Widow(er)'s Pension?

The War Widow(er)’s Pension is a compensation payment provided to eligible partners of veterans whose death resulted from war service or eligible Defence service. The pension is paid under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act (VEA) and is designed to provide ongoing financial support to surviving partners. [dva.gov.au]

Key features include:

  • Ongoing compensation payments for eligible widowed partners. [dva.gov.au]
  • Not affected by other income, except certain compensation payments. [dva.gov.au]
  • Tax-free payments that do not need to be declared in a tax return. [dva.gov.au]
  • Access to a Veteran Card: All Conditions, providing healthcare coverage for all conditions within Australia. [dva.gov.au]

Who May Be Eligible?

According to DVA, a war widow or widower is generally a person who was legally married to, or in a recognised de facto relationship with, an Australian veteran immediately before the veteran’s death. [dva.gov.au]

In some circumstances, dependent children may also be entitled to support through DVA programs and pensions. [dva.gov.au]

Eligibility is determined by DVA and depends on the veteran’s circumstances, accepted conditions and service history. [dva.gov.au]

Additional Support Available Through DVA

The War Widow(er)’s Pension may be only one of several supports available.

Veteran Card – All Conditions

Eligible recipients of the War Widow(er)’s Pension receive a Veteran Card: All Conditions, providing access to a wide range of healthcare services and treatment within Australia. [dva.gov.au]

Income Support Supplement (ISS)

Some war widows and war widowers may be eligible for the Income Support Supplement (ISS), an income and assets tested payment designed to provide additional financial support. [dva.gov.au]

Energy Supplement

Eligible recipients may also receive the Energy Supplement to assist with household energy costs. [dva.gov.au]

Concessions and Additional Assistance

DVA advises that war widows and war widowers may be entitled to a range of concessions relating to utilities and public transport, depending on their circumstances and location. [dva.gov.au]

Support for Dependent Children

Where a veteran’s death has been accepted as service-related, dependent children may be eligible for educational assistance and other support programs through DVA. [dva.gov.au]

Automatic Grants in Certain Circumstances

In some situations, DVA may automatically grant a War Widow(er)’s Pension without requiring further investigation. This can occur where the veteran was receiving certain specified DVA compensation payments or held particular veteran classifications before passing away. [dva.gov.au]

Where an automatic grant does not apply, a claim may need to be lodged with DVA for eligibility to be assessed. [dva.gov.au]

Important Financial Considerations

While DVA support can provide valuable assistance, it is important to understand how these benefits fit within your overall financial situation.
